Easily Impressed Nerd

I’m such a nerd. I’m impressed by anything computerized or related to technology. I love shiny things. I love learning how things work. But then again, aren’t we all? My favorite moments in life are when I see art marry science. In our new era of technology, the applications of computerization are endless. With our new found power, will our society use it for good? For art? For health? Here are three interesting applications of technology and how it can shape the world we live in.

The first time I watched this video I almost cried. Okay, I cried a little bit. But only because it was such a beautiful thing to watch–golden raindrops dancing to the song inside of my head. I want to take a trip to Singapore just to see this art installation. I was a little sad when I didn’t see more people standing around watching the rain float through the air. I hope that more airports improve their terminals with art installations, to enhance our travel experiences. That’s the least they can do for making us wait in line! Overall, its beautiful because every movement is planned, designed, and timed perfectly to insure that the show is consistently amazing! Presenting “Kinetic Rain.

If you became blind by a freak accident, or lost a limb, or needed an organ replaced, where would you draw the line when it came to incorporating technology in your body? Many people already have computerized pacemakers, artificial limbs, and glass eyes. But what if your pacemaker could monitor multiple internal processes? What if limbs could connect to your central nervous system and have full dexterity? What if your glass eye was connected to your brain and the internet? The age of human cyborgs is among us. Where to draw the line is unclear, as we seemingly believe in medical technologies to save us, when needed. Neil Harbisson is a prime example of what the future could look like for our society. He’s a color blind man that no longer sees only in black and white, thanks to a device that turns frequencies into a symphony of color. This was one of the most interesting TED Talks I’ve heard, and now I’m sharing it with you!

With the wide availability and spread of knowledge via the internet, it is easier for people to discover new sounds, and to be discovered. Social media allows us to reconnect with old friends, share images of our amazing lives, and now, my new favorite, share our garageband hobbies with our friends and family. I’ve fallen in love with the website (and phone app) called Soundcloud. Soundcloud is a platform in which you can share music (or sounds) of the world with the world. I’ve started uploaded some personal music of mine, which I wrote, produced and recorded (amateur style!) using Garageband (such an amazing computerized program for making music!!!). Technology has made sharing more streamlined (before I would email my friends .mp3s individually, now we just post a link!) I use sound cloud to play sounds of nature to put me to sleep via my Sonos speaker, to discover new artists, share my own music, and even now, I’m listening to an awesome exclusive in-depth interview with Joni Mitchell.

In The End…

Overall, I’m thoroughly optimistic about our future with our relationship with technology. I’m not quite sure if I would opt for robotic arms or electronic chips, but then again, I’m not saying I wouldn’t. The point is that we are able to create more, use technology for inspiration and sharing, and peek into the world we live in, that we were not able to do even 2 decades ago. It will help us find our purpose. Its such a natural feeling to want to connect with others, and our world is moving towards an amazing global community.

Why are we alive? What is our purpose? Simply put, our purpose is to live.

As conscious beings, humans live the life we choose, so choose wisely. We can choose to be successful and happy, or choose to live on the streets, depressed and lonely. We can choose to have a job, choose to travel the world, choose to get fat, or choose to eat an ice cream cone on a hot summer day. We can choose to have close friends, or choose to work 3 part time jobs to support your family. We can choose our path in education, choose to max our credit cards on holiday shopping sprees, or choose to learn a new language. Every decision we make is a choice, whether we know it or not, that affects our lives in some way. Our choices are microcosms that make up the sum of who we are, and help define our purpose.

Helping others should always be at the top of your life goals. How can we help others? The biggest ways are to donate time and money. By volunteering at the local dog shelter or community theatre, you can make a HUGE impact on others. I have recently donated my time and musical skills to the Coronado Playhouse in their upcoming production of Avenue Q. This community theatre is dedicated to producing high quality performances, paring young artists with experts of acting, as well as pairing with another non profit in the community to spread their efforts.

The story line is told through master puppetry, an art form uncommon in todays technological age, in a Sesame Street after-school-special fashion, and focuses on young Princeton trying to find his purpose. Through falling in love, making mistakes, and learning that the internet was made for porn, (as sung by a cookie monster based character), we get to know all the characters on Avenue Q and learn about everyones purpose.

We learn the while we might have our eye on the one in the spot light, there might come a more seductive alternative. Making mistakes along the way is part of all our journeys. The moment you turn your mistakes into lessons, then you’re on your way to enlightenment. There are no wrong answers, there are no wrong notes, there are not wrong choices. There is life, purpose, lessons, and love. Following your heart isn’t always easy, but just knowing that there is no “right” answer can help us navigate the journey of finding our purpose.

The theatre does a fantastic job of promoting itself around the community. With articles featured in the paper at San Diego State University, the local “Whats Happening For the Gays” magazine Rageand partnering with the SD Humane Society and Paws of Coronado, the people involved truly care about the community. And that, I suppose, is my purpose. To care. To help others. And of course, to spread the gift of music.

Do you feel a sense of life happening around you in your community? Do you walk often, or ride your bike, just because its so great to do that? Have you ever noticed something you’ve never seen before, while walking around your neighborhood? Each morning in Pacific Beach, California, feels just like that. This magical place seems to attract new and interesting people, objects, and experiences on a daily basis. I think its caused by the super saturation of sun and perfect weather. Either way, it enhances my life to live in a place that is so…alive.

3 Reason to Work in a Magic Place

What I do on a daily basis is not work. It's fun it's challenging. It's rewarding. But not work. I am a licensed cosmetologist taking care of clients' hair needs morning noon and, sometimes nights. But what happens during that 1-2 hour appointment time is special. Here's why:

1. Magic

Literally. If you could become someone totally different in a few short hours, how much would you pay? $50? $100? $200? What does it take to make that change from old you to new you? New color? New cut? Let’s do it. Not only do I have the power to transform someone’s way of being, but also the perception of others about them. Which is more important? After all, who we are is how others define us as. Including our fashion choices, what we say, and the hair we wear. Whether you like it or not.

To start a consultation, I often ask “What do you want your hair to say about you?” or “Who do you want to be?” Many clients choose to maintain their current look, while others are ready for a change. Whether it be to prepare for an upcoming job interview, or to look smashing for a party, the hair you wear will determine your future. So make it magical.

2. Creativity.

Are you in a position where you create new and exciting content? Or perhaps you are a manager and your job is part of inspiring young professionals and shaping their destiny. I feel like I’m a part of Ellie’s dream. Her passion and creativity inspires me back. How can you inspire others? How can you find ways to be creative, even if “creativity” isn’t on the top of your job duties?

At Belli Belli Salon, it’s apparent that creativity is free flowing. Between hair painting, sculpting precision cuts, and designing high fashion braids, it’s hard to determine where it ends and begins. I love to inspire clients to follow their dreams, even if it means losing a great client to another city. They inspire me to do the same. Hence this blog.

3. Freedom.

Having a respected level of autonomy is of vital importance to allow creativity and magic to occur. Not may people enjoy a micromanager hovering above their every move; it’s also highly inefficient. How many emails do you get from your boss? Do they ever accomplish anything? Stylists in my world seem to float through the air as they walk through the hair salon. Magic.

Are you in a position to make or influence decisions? Why not? Is that good or bad? We all influence on each other, from clients to colleagues. From our fashion choices, how we speak, and even eating habits, we can change the world around us, one person at a time. So exercise your freedom to influence others, and make sure you always do it in a positive way.
